Clinical trial: the impact of ingested collagen on skin health

Science, grounded in research and clinical trials, is at the heart of everything we do here at Zooki - which is why Zooki Collagen products only contain collagen that is clinically proven to improve skin hydration, elasticity and roughness.

Objective and study design

The aim of this clinical trial was to investigate impact of hydrolysed marine collagen ingestion on skin hydration, elasticity and roughness.

This was an 8-week randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study examining the effects of collagen hydrolysate (the same collagen used in Collagen Zooki) ingestion on facial skin. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment regimens: a 2500mg dose of collagen daily or 5000mg of placebo daily. Samples were ingested once a day after dinner for 8 weeks.

How the skin was
measured

All facial skin property measurements were carried out at weeks 0 (baseline), 4 and 8. On each measurement day,
the subjects washed off their makeup and then were
acclimatised for 30 min in the waiting lounge fixed at a
constant temperature of 20 ± 2 °C and humidity of 50 ± 5 % prior to measurement.

Skin hydration and elasticity were measured on one side of the canthus while skin roughness was assessed on one side of the cheek by the same blinded investigator. All measurements were performed in triplicate. To measure skin hydration and skin elasticity as gross elasticity, a Comeometer® 820 and Cutometer® SEM 575 were used, respectively. Skin roughness was measured using a VisicoFace SSA.

The results

Statistically significant improvements in skin elasticity, hydration and smoothness for those who took collagen compared to the placebo in as little as 4 weeks. What's more - those who didn't take collagen saw their skin deteriorate over the same period.

Discussion: how collagen impacts skin health

Collagen is the primary structural protein in the skin, tendons, bones and ligaments. It acts as a scaffolding that literally keeps us upright and forms the padding for youthful, robust skin.

As we age, collagen production falls, resulting in weaker tendons and muscles as well as sagging skin and wrinkles. Maintaining collagen levels can support your strength and resilience both inside and outside the body.

The proposed mechanism of action of collagen’s impact on skin health involves reducing the loss of moisture and lipids in the skin, promoting anti-oxidative activity, and repairing the endogenous collagen and elastin fibres.

"Zooki supplements are the future. With powder and capsule supplements we only absorb approximately 10% of the nutrient, whereas with Zooki supplements we absorb around 95% - a huge difference!"
